Adventurer and journalist Dan Buettner has been studying cultures with a high proportion of centenarians to find out what residents have in common. These regions, which he calls Blue Zones, include Sardinia in Italy, Okinawa in Japan and Icaria in Greece.

Dan and his team found that, along with regular exercise, a plant-based diet and feeling part of a strong community, many of those flourishing in their 80s and 90s also had another commonality: a love of gardening.

He says the hobby is great for the mind and the body, boosting mood and providing a gentle workout for all ages.
